Dual Compressor Train Horn Setup: Twice the Fill Speed, Worth It?

Does a dual compressor train horn setup really halve refill time? Manufacturer fill times, wiring, plumbing, and real costs for 8- and 10-gallon systems.

A dual compressor train horn setup is the upgrade people reach for when a single pump can’t keep up: the tank takes forever to recover, or the tank you want is bigger than one compressor is rated to feed. Here’s what two compressors really buy you, with fill times from the manufacturers’ own spec sheets, plus the wiring, plumbing, and dollar cost of doing it right.

What a second compressor changes, and what it doesn’t

A compressor is the supply side of your air system. It doesn’t store air and it doesn’t make the horn louder. It decides how fast the tank comes back up after you drain it, and how big a tank you can realistically keep full.

Two compressors feeding the same tank roughly double the cubic feet per minute (CFM) going in, so the tank refills in about half the time. Just as important, manufacturers double the rated tank size for the pair. Viair rates a single 444C or 480C for a 5-gallon tank and the dual packs for up to 10 gallons. HornBlasters does the same with its 1NM: 5 gallons for one, 10 for the pair.

The fill-time math, from the spec sheets

The “twice the fill speed” claim holds up well when you compare a single compressor to the dual kit built from the same model. Every figure below is from HornBlasters’ product pages, measured at 13.8 volts.

Read the top-off columns, because that’s the number that matters in daily use. Your pressure switch never drains the tank to zero. On a 5-gallon tank a single 444C needs almost three minutes to climb from 165 to 200 PSI, while the dual kit does it in about a minute and a half.

The dual 480C kit also publishes a 10-gallon figure: 10 minutes 30 seconds from empty to 200 PSI and 3 minutes 10 seconds for the top-off. That’s the same fill time a single 480C posts on a 5-gallon tank. That’s the cleanest way to think about dual compressors: you keep the recovery time you’re used to while doubling the tank.

HornBlasters’ kit lineup shows the same thing. The Conductor’s Special 544K runs one 1NM on a 5-gallon tank and lists a 2-minute recovery with 10 to 12 seconds of honk. The 844K runs dual 1NMs on an 8-gallon tank and lists a 2-minute 26-second recovery with 18 to 20 seconds of honk. Sixty percent more air, nearly double the blast time, and the wait barely moves.

When dual compressors make sense

Not every horn needs two pumps. Use this as the checklist:

  • You want a tank over 5 gallons. Viair and HornBlasters both cap a single compressor at 5 gallons, so an 8- or 10-gallon system needs two pumps to stay inside the rating
  • You honk repeatedly in a session (shows, parades, trail runs) and the tank never catches up
  • You run tires, air tools, lockers, or suspension off the tank, all of which drain air far faster than a few honks
  • You’re on a 5-gallon tank with one compressor and want a 2- to 3-minute recovery down to about a minute and a half

And when it’s money you don’t need to spend:

  • Your tank is 2 gallons or smaller. A single 1NM already refills a 2-gallon tank from 110 to 150 PSI in about 35 seconds
  • You honk a few times a day and the compressor finishes before your next blast
  • Your problem is running dry mid-honk, which more storage fixes and more pumping doesn’t
  • You don’t want to run a second heavy circuit from the battery

Three ways to go dual

Buy a matched dual pack, add a second unit to an existing compressor, or buy a kit that ships with two. Prices are what retailers listed in early September 2026 and will move.

The dual 400C kit moves the most air for the money (4.55 CFM combined, 52 seconds to top off a 5-gallon tank from 110 to 145 PSI), but it’s a 33 percent duty-cycle compressor at 100 PSI pulling 60 amps as a pair. The 444C, 480C, and 1NM pairs are all rated 100 percent duty at 100 PSI, which is what you want if the system does anything besides honking.

Check what’s in the box. The dual 480C and dual 400C kits include two relays and a pressure switch; the dual 444C kit and dual 1NM pack don’t, so add roughly $100 for a switch-and-relay pack before comparing totals. If you already own a 1NM kit, the upgrade pack ships with the dual pressure switch and wiring, and HornBlasters promises it will “cut your tank refill time in half.”

Wiring two compressors the right way

The biggest dual-compressor mistake is feeding both pumps off one power wire. HornBlasters’ dual-compressor wiring page is blunt: run a dedicated 10-gauge lead from the battery for each compressor, because one run cannot handle both at once. Here’s the layout it describes, using two 40-amp relays:

  1. Pin 30 on each relay gets its own fused 10-gauge red wire straight from battery positive. Two compressors, two runs, two fuses.
  2. Pin 87 on each relay feeds that relay’s compressor positive lead. Each relay drives exactly one compressor.
  3. Pin 85 on both relays goes to ground. The two relays can share one 18-gauge ground to chassis or battery negative.
  4. Pin 86 is the trigger. Wire one pressure-switch terminal to pin 86 on the first relay, then jump it to pin 86 on the second so both compressors start and stop together.
  5. The other pressure-switch terminal goes to a key-on source (radio, amplifier, or heated-seat circuit are the suggested taps) so the compressors only run with the vehicle on.

That last step isn’t only about battery drain. HornBlasters’ compressor FAQ notes the system sits at 12 volts with the engine off and 13.8 volts with the alternator charging, and running a compressor at the lower voltage can cause an amperage spike that damages the compressor or pressure switch.

Plumbing: one tank, two inlets, one switch

Plumbing is easier than wiring. Every dual pack ships with a leader hose and check valve for each compressor. Run each one through its own leader hose and check valve into a separate tank port. The check valves keep one compressor from pushing air backward through the other when it’s off, and keep tank pressure off the heads at startup.

Use one pressure switch for the whole system, threaded into any spare tank port, triggering both relays. Don’t stagger two switches; both compressors should run together, or the second unit does nothing for your fill time. Set the switch to what your horn wants: HornBlasters’ 1NM kits run a 110/150 PSI band, while the Viair 480C packs ship with a 165/200 PSI switch for 200 PSI systems.

The hidden costs don’t show on the price tag. A 480C weighs 11.05 pounds per Viair’s spec and a 1NM 10.1 pounds, so a pair is 20-plus pounds of compressor on the frame. You’ll need a second 10-gauge run with its own fuse, a second relay, a second mounting spot, and roughly double the amps from the alternator whenever the tank cycles. Counted honestly, a dual setup is a $120 to $315 parts upgrade, depending on the kit and whether the switch and relays are included, plus an afternoon of extra install time.

Bottom line

Dual compressors deliver what they promise. Manufacturer fill times show a matched pair cutting refill time by about half, and a pair is the only way to keep an 8- or 10-gallon tank inside its rating. If you’re building a big-tank system, honking repeatedly at events, or running tires and tools off the same tank, the second compressor is money well spent. If your tank is 2 gallons and you honk a few times a day, put the money into a bigger tank or better trumpets, and revisit dual compressors when your tank outgrows one pump.
