Are train horns legal in Utah?
Installing an aftermarket train horn on a private vehicle in Utah is not prohibited. UT train horn law is in Utah Code §41-6a-1625 — “Horn or warning device.” Standard UVC pattern: 200-ft audibility, no “unreasonably loud or harsh sound,” use limited to safe-operation cases, and sirens/whistles/bells barred on non-emergency vehicles. Traffic infraction penalty class.
Install is legal; use on Utah public roads — Salt Lake City, Provo, West Valley City, West Jordan, Orem, Sandy, Ogden, St. George — is the regulated behavior.
What Utah Code §41-6a-1625 actually says
A motor vehicle operated on a highway shall be equipped with a horn in good working order and capable of emitting sound audible under normal conditions from a distance of not less than 200 feet. A horn or other warning device may not emit an unreasonably loud or harsh sound or a whistle. A vehicle may not be equipped with, and a person may not use on a vehicle, a siren, whistle, or bell, except as permitted under this chapter. The operator of a motor vehicle shall, when reasonably necessary to ensure safe operation, give audible warning with the horn but may not otherwise use the horn when upon a highway.
Operative rules: 200-ft audibility · no unreasonably loud or harsh sound or whistle · no siren/whistle/bell (emergency exempt) · safe-operation use limit.
Does the factory horn need to stay working in Utah?
Yes. §41-6a-1625 applies to the vehicle as a whole.

- ·Unreasonably loud or harsh language
- ·Multi-note chord, not a whistle tone
- ·Install not banned

Portable and battery-powered train horns in Utah
§41-6a-1625 regulates “a horn or other warning device” — power source agnostic. M18, DeWalt 20V, Ryobi, Makita portables fall under the same rules.
Enforcement in practice
Utah is moderately enforcing. Salt Lake City, Provo, Ogden, and St. George see more complaint-driven enforcement; rural south-central UT and Uinta Basin rarely cite.
