Are train horns legal in Nevada? Short answer
Installing an aftermarket train horn on a private vehicle in Nevada is not prohibited. Nevada train horn law is in NRS 484D.400 — “Horns and other warning devices” — with a companion NRS 484D.410 authorizing Nevada DMV to set noise-emission standards. Every motor vehicle must carry a horn audible at 200 feet; no horn may emit “unreasonably loud or harsh sound or a whistle”; use is limited to safe-operation cases.
Install is legal; use on public roads in Las Vegas (Strip, Henderson, North Las Vegas), Reno, Sparks, Carson City is the regulated behavior.
What NRS 484D.400 actually says
Every motor vehicle when operated upon a highway shall be equipped with a horn in good working order and capable of emitting sound audible under normal conditions from a distance of not less than 200 feet, but no horn or other warning device shall emit an unreasonably loud or harsh sound or a whistle. The driver of a motor vehicle shall, when reasonably necessary to insure safe operation, give audible warning with the horn, but shall not otherwise use such horn when upon a highway.
Operative rules:
- 200-ft audibility requirement.
- No “unreasonably loud or harsh sound or whistle.”
- Use limited to safe-operation cases.
- NRS 484D.410 delegates noise-emission rulemaking to the Nevada DMV — an additional regulatory lever beyond the basic statute.
Does the factory horn need to stay working in Nevada?
Yes. NRS 484D.400 applies to the vehicle as a whole. Keep OEM horn wired.
Is a train horn a “whistle” under NRS 484D.400?
- ·Siren — variable-pitch continuous tone
- ·Whistle — single-tone pressure device
- ·Bell — fire / warning bell
- ·Emergency vehicles exempt
- ·Multi-note chord, not a whistle tone
- ·Install not banned
- ·Use subject to "unreasonably loud" test
- ·DMV noise regs under 484D.410 can apply
Portable and battery-powered train horns in Nevada
NRS 484D.400 regulates horn equipment without distinguishing power source. Milwaukee M18, DeWalt 20V, Ryobi ONE+, and Makita LXT portables fall under the same rules.
Enforcement in practice
Nevada enforcement is concentrated in Las Vegas and Reno. LVMPD (Las Vegas Metropolitan Police) actively addresses noise complaints on the Strip and in residential areas of Clark County. Rural Nevada — vast, low population — rarely sees horn enforcement.
Practical Nevada train horn compliance
- 01 Keep the factory horn wired and functional
The 200-ft rule applies to the vehicle as a whole.
- 02 Put the train horn on a separate switch
Distinct from OEM button.
- 03 Use the factory horn for ordinary signaling
Safe-operation limit per NRS 484D.400.
- 04 Avoid Strip / residential use in Clark County
LVMPD actively cites noise violations on Strip and in Henderson.
- 05 Watch Las Vegas / Reno ordinances
Municipal codes can add restrictions beyond state law.
- 06 Hearing protection when testing
140+ dB causes immediate damage.
