HornBlasters Conductor's Special 548 Train Horn Kit Review (2026)

Methodology

This review aggregates publicly available information from manufacturer specifications, retailer listings, and verified user reviews. We do not perform hands-on testing. Last reviewed: September 4, 2026. The Conductor’s Special 548 is no longer listed on hornblasters.com, so we built the spec sheet from the brand’s archived 548 kit and HornAir 548 air-system pages, the live HornBlasters pages for the two components it is made of (the Shocker XL horn and the Viair 480C compressor), and the Dales Super Store listing that currently sells it. Every external source appears in the Sources section at the end.

Quick verdict

The Conductor’s Special 548 is the Viair-powered version of HornBlasters’ 5-gallon Shocker kit, and we rate it 3.9/5. The ingredients are excellent: the same US-made Shocker XL trumpets the brand rates at 147.7 dB “actual,” a 5-gallon 8-port tank, and a Viair 480C compressor rated for 100% duty cycle at 100 PSI. The problem is context. HornBlasters itself no longer sells the 548, and the one retailer we found stocking it charges $1,199.99, which is about $150 more than the brand’s current 544K kit that uses the same horns and tank with a newer in-house compressor and a longer warranty. Editorial opinion: buy it if you specifically want a Viair 480C in the box, or if a dealer discounts it. Otherwise the current 544K is the smarter spend.

What it is

The Conductor’s Special 548 (part number HK-S4-548; Dales Super Store lists the SKU as HK-S4-548K) is a complete 12-volt train horn kit. The “S4” means four Shocker XL trumpets, the “5” means a 5-gallon tank, and the “48” means a Viair 480C compressor. HornBlasters’ own archived listing described it as “the loudest compact horn kit on the market” and warned that “this kit is not for the faint of heart.” Dales repeats that same copy today.

HornBlasters has used this naming scheme for years: the 540 paired the horns with a Viair 400C, the 544 with a 444C and later the brand’s own HB-1NM compressor, and the 548 with the 480C. As of this review the brand’s live Conductor’s Special listing offers 127H, 228H, 232, 244K, 544K and 844K tiers, with no 548. A December 2019 archive of the HornAir 548 air-system page on hornblasters.com shows it selling for $459.99 as a standalone system. That makes the 548 a legacy configuration that survives in dealer inventory rather than a current catalog item.

Who is it for? Full-size truck, SUV and heavy-vehicle owners who want maximum honk duration plus usable onboard air, and who already know they want a Viair compressor. Install / compatibility notes

This is a full onboard-air installation, not a bolt-on. Plan for the following, based on the component spec sheets:

1. Space. The tank is 20.5 inches long and 9.5 inches in diameter, the compressor is nearly 11 inches long, and the longest trumpet is 19.5 inches. Under-bed frame rails on a full-size pickup are the usual home; compact cars will struggle.
2. Wiring. The 480C draws up to 23 amps, so run the supplied heavy-gauge wire straight to the battery through the fuse holder and use the pressure switch’s relay. Our amp draw, fuse and wire gauge guide covers sizing.
3. Pressure. Because the Shocker XL horn is rated for 150 PSI max working pressure, we would run the 110/150 PSI switch configuration described on the 2019 HornAir 548 page rather than a 200 PSI switch, even though the compressor can reach 200 PSI.
4. Air line. Use the 1/2 inch line and a 1/2 inch port for the horn feed; HornBlasters’ current Shocker XL page specifies a 1/2 inch port requirement. See our air line size guide.
5. Intake. Mount the remote intake filter high and dry using the 3/8 inch intake line; the 480C is described as moisture and dirt resistant.
6. Drain. Put the drain cock on the lowest tank port and drain regularly. The 8-port layout lets you do this in any orientation.

Compatibility is universal for 12-volt vehicles. Because HornBlasters no longer lists the 548, the current HornAir 5-gallon and Viair 480C product pages on the brand site are your best install references. An owner report on Train Horn Forums about the sister 540 kit describes a high-pitched squeal from one trumpet in hot weather; HornBlasters support told the owner it was not the horns, and the troubleshooting focused on the valve and airflow without a firm resolution. Treat that as anecdote, but it is a reminder to check the valve and line routing first if the chord sounds off.
